Dental EOB extraction · Built for Open Dental

Dental EOB extraction
ends here.

Argus is dental EOB extraction and payment-posting software. It turns paper and PDF explanation-of-benefits documents into reviewed, balanced payment data—then posts to Open Dental only when a human says go.

01 / The overlooked gap

ERAs solved most of payment posting.
Most is not all.

Even efficient practices still receive a stubborn remainder of insurance payments as paper or PDF EOBs. Each one has to be read, interpreted, balanced, and keyed into the practice management system.

5–15%of payments may remain outside the clean ERA workflow
5–10 minof trained manual work for each paper EOB
mattersbecause the check and every claim payment must reconcile

Estimates reflect the operating context Argus is being designed around; results vary by payer mix, enrollment, and workflow.

02 / One document, five stages

Eyes. Calculator.
Judgment. Keyboard.

Argus separates the work into deliberate stages. Extraction and auditing remain read-only. Posting is a distinct, human-triggered act.

02

Extract

AI reads unstructured documents; structured 835 files take a deterministic path.

Data is organized
03

Audit

Exact decimal math re-derives line totals and reconciles the check.

Every dollar accounted for
04

Review

A person inspects the source beside the extracted fields and can correct anything.

Human judgment stays central
05

Only an explicit click begins the Open Dental posting workflow.

03 / The calculator

AI reads it.
Math proves it.

Extraction can be probabilistic. Financial reconciliation should not be. Argus uses exact decimal arithmetic to test the accounting identity for every service line and the payment as a whole.

04 / Designed for caution

Automation with
a hard stop.

The central design rule is simple: nothing is written to Open Dental until a human explicitly chooses to post.

01

Human-in-the-loop

Source document and extracted data stay together for fast, accountable review.

02

Duplicate defenses

Argus checks its event history and Open Dental payment records before posting.

03

Rollback-aware posting

A failed multi-step post can be safely restored—no partial writes left behind.

04

Tamper-evident history

Every transition lands in an append-only audit history that even the application itself cannot alter or delete.

05 / Security & HIPAA

HIPAA compliant.
By design, not disclaimer.

Argus was built by dental IT operators who implement HIPAA controls for a living. A Business Associate Agreement is provided for every founding practice and customer.

BAA

Covered end to end

Every service in the Argus data path—including the AI extraction service—operates under a signed Business Associate Agreement. Many AI tools can't say that about their AI layer.

Encryption

Encrypted everywhere

PHI is encrypted in transit and at rest, and database traffic never traverses the public internet.

Retention

Seven-day PHI purge

Raw EOB content is automatically purged within seven days. The permanent audit record keeps only PHI-free facts—what happened, when, and the amounts.

Access

Three layers of access control

Perimeter sign-in, per-user provisioning, and per-office authorization. A reviewer sees only the offices they're assigned—and each layer is independently revocable for instant offboarding.

Response

Ready for the bad day

Documented incident-response and breach-assessment procedures, automated backups with point-in-time recovery, and monitored alerting.

Redaction

PHI never leaks to logs

Errors and logs pass through an automatic sanitizer that redacts names, member IDs, dates of birth, and contact details before anything is stored.

06 / What exists today

Built and deployed.
Ready for founding practices.

Argus is running in a secure cloud environment, connected to an Open Dental development system, and backed by an extensive automated test suite. It has not yet processed real patient EOBs — founding practices will be the first, onboarded hands-on by the people who built it.

08 / Questions

Argus, answered.

The questions dental teams ask most about trusting Argus with posting. For the category basics—what EOB extraction is, which formats and fields—see the EOB extraction page.

Does Argus work with Open Dental?

Yes. Argus is built specifically for Open Dental. After extraction and auditing, a person reviews the results and posts reviewed, balanced payments into Open Dental. Nothing is written to Open Dental until a human explicitly approves it.

How does Argus handle denied claims and denial codes?

Argus captures adjustment and denial reason codes during extraction, so denied lines are visible during review alongside the billed, allowed, write-off, plan-paid, and patient-responsibility amounts for each service line.

How accurate is the EOB extraction?

Extraction is probabilistic, so Argus does not trust it blindly. Every extracted line is checked with exact-decimal arithmetic that re-derives line totals and reconciles the check, and a person reviews the source document beside the extracted fields before posting. AI extraction, deterministic math, and human review together are how Argus keeps posting accurate.

Is Argus HIPAA compliant?

Yes. Argus runs on enterprise cloud infrastructure under a signed Business Associate Agreement that covers every service in the data path—including the AI extraction service. PHI is encrypted in transit and at rest, access is authenticated and scoped per office, raw EOB content is automatically purged within seven days, and a BAA is provided to every practice.
